Cardinal Newman High School in Scarborough has a strong tradition of being community minded. Every year, the entire school embarks on a fundraising campaign – aptly called ScarTREK – for local charities which is then celebrated by the student body, teachers and staff on a walk from their Bluffs location southwest to Toronto’s Kew Beach.
Sandro Mancino, head of religious studies and staff coordinator for ScarTREK says the students enjoy raising money for good causes and thinks they learn something in the process.
“It’s a chance for us as a part of our community to reach out and do a little bit for our community and to help teach us a little something too,” he said.
This is the second year The Bluffs Food Bank has been a recipient of Cardinal Newman’s fundraising efforts. Previously, money raised through ScarTREK has enabled The Bluffs Food Bank to purchase industrial refrigeration appliances resulting in the ability to serve more people.
